#CTOTD: How to utilize a URL Shortener

June 1st, 2011

Do you have a shortened URL to use on twitter and other social networking sites? Not know how to easily use it?

1. Download Chrome. In our opinion, the best browser on the market.

2. Create an account with bit.ly.

3. Install the chrome plugin and you are done.

Now every time you are on a page you would like to shorten just click on the bit.ly smiley face and it automatically shortens the link.  The last step would be to paste that shortened link into your Twitter, Facebook, or other social media post and you are done. For even faster shortening, right click the bit.ly smiley face in the toolbar, click options, and enable the “Auto Copy Short URL’s” option.  Happy shortening!

Microsoft: 1 in 14 downloads are malicious

May 18th, 2011

With the popularity of Facebook, MySpace and other social media sites, Hackers and information gathering has evolved to present themselves from more trusted sources, your friends. Hackers have moved from the malicious software which may crash your system and result in expense for you to have your system cleaned up, to the more sneaky installation of code hidden in free software. The main purpose is simply to gather your information, personal details as well as your browsing history. This information can then be sold to marketing companies etc. Systems are also being infected to be used as a robot, to spread the malware via the internet and conceal the true identity of the origin. Although IE9 has placed several security measures in place to counter this, as evidenced in the following article the vulnerability is still with the end user. Always ask yourself, is Free really free? What is the cost that I am really paying for this free program? Is the cost acceptable? Do some research on Bing and Google to see what others are saying about the software you are about to download before making the decision.

It can be a lengthy process that normally consists of following steps: clicking the windows key or start menu key, then selecting the search bar at the bottom of the start menu, then typing run, and then clicking or pressing enter to get the run box to display. Instead hold down the windows key and click the letter “R” key. This will promptly bring up the desired run dialog box. Look for the next #CTOTD tomorrow. Happy Computing!
